History
The flag combines the historic emblems of the medieval kingdoms of Castile and León, represented by a castle and a lion. The lion motif is associated with Alfonso VII of León, who united León and Castile in 1126, and the castle emblem is linked to Alfonso VIII of Castile. The present flag was formally adopted in the 1983 Statute of Autonomy of Castile and León.
