History
The California state flag is known as the Bear Flag. Its design commemorates the short-lived California Republic proclaimed during the 1846 Bear Flag Revolt in Sonoma. The lone red star recalls the 1836 Lone Star Flag used in an earlier independence movement, while the bear represents strength, independence, and the California grizzly. The flag was formally adopted by the California legislature on February 3, 1911, and later standardized in 1953 with a 2:3 proportion.
