Antwerp

The municipal flag of Antwerp was formally adopted by the city council on 13 November 1984, enacted by Flemish decree on 5 March 1985, and published on 8 June 1986. Its colors are drawn from Antwerp’s coat of arms. The coat of arms motif dates back to the city’s earliest seals of 1239 and reflects the legend of the giant Antigoon and the symbolic open castle door associated with Antwerp’s historic openness to trade and the world.
