A red flag with a centered white five-petal bauhinia flower, each petal containing a small red five-pointed star and a red curved stamen line.
The flag of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region features a stylized white five-petal Bauhinia × blakeana flower on a red field. The design was created by Tao Ho, approved on 4 April 1990, and first hoisted on 1 July 1997 at the handover of Hong Kong. The red field reflects Hong Kong's link to China, while the white flower represents Hong Kong and is associated with the principle of "one country, two systems." The five stars on the petals echo the stars of the national flag of China.
