#1842
The most well-known version of the "Red Ensign" flags flown in Canada prior to the adoption of the Maple Leaf flag in 1965, and the version still occasionally seen in some contexts in Canada today, though the "green leaf" version (1921-1957) is not uncommon. Following lengthy debate in parliament, this flag was officially retired by statute and replaced on February 15, 1965. Given the polarizing nature of the flag debate, the Red Ensign continued to be used as a symbol of resistance to the Maple Leaf flag for many years, and inspired a similar-looking flag to be created for the province of Ontario in May of 1965. The flag is still sometimes used as a signifier of being very conservative, traditional, monarchist, or Anglophilic, though in recent years the flag is also sometimes accused of being used as a symbol for white nationalists or other far-right groups resenting "modern Canada."
This flag is a former version of Canada.
