Achtkarspelen is a municipality located in Friesland, Netherlands. The flag is based on the municipal coat of arms, which has been recognised since 1818. The municipal coat of arms depicts eight church towers that together form a kerspelkerk. This church symbolises the eight church villages (kerspelen) that were in Achtkarspelen at the beginning of the nineteenth century. No doubt, the name of the municipality is also derived from this. However, the coat of arms with the eight towers is much older, dating from the early 15th century. The municipal flag contains three horizontal stripes in red, white and green in the background. In the foreground is an eight-pointed blue star representing the eight church towers, or church villages.
