The flag of Yucatán, also known as the flag of the Republic of Yucatán, consists of a rectangle divided into two fields: the left field in green, and the right field divided into three horizontal stripes—red at the top and bottom, and white in the middle. The green field features five white stars (four in the corners and one at the center), representing the departments into which Yucatán was divided in 1840: Mérida, Izamal, Valladolid, Tekax, and Campeche. The three colors—green, white, and red—refer to the Three Guarantees symbolized in the flag of Mexico. The flag was first flown on March 16, 1841, as a separatist symbol of internal sovereignty and as a protest against the centralist policies of General Antonio López de Santa Anna, who sought to abolish the federal system. Although the flag was not officially recognized for many years, on June 20, 2024, the Congress of the State of Yucatán decreed its adoption as the official flag of the state of Yucatán.
