The flag of Saudi Arabia is a green field bearing the white Shahada in Arabic calligraphy above a white horizontal sword.
The Saudi flag displays the Shahada in white Arabic calligraphy on a green field, with a white sword beneath it. The green field symbolizes Islam, and the sword represents safety and justice. The basic green banner with the Shahada was used by early 20th-century Wahhabi forces, and a sword was added by Abdulaziz Al-Saud in 1921. After several earlier variants, the present design was standardized by royal decree on 15 March 1973. Because of its religious inscription, the flag is made so the text appears correctly on both sides and it is not flown vertically or at half-mast.
Present form approved
An official Saudi account says King Abdulaziz approved the flag in its present form on March 11, 1937.
Current design standardized
The 1973 flag law established the current design and its official specifications.
