Chile (1818)
#5021
Known as La Estrella Solitaria (The Lone Star), the current flag of Chile was officially adopted on 18 October 1817 during the independence period. The design is attributed to Ignacio Zenteno, with some accounts also naming Gregorio de Andía y Varela. The blue, white, and red design is associated with earlier patriotic symbols and earlier Chilean flags, including the Patria Vieja tricolor and the 1817 Flag of Transition. According to the referenced symbolism, blue represents the sky and Pacific Ocean, white the snow of the Andes, red the blood shed for independence, and the lone white star symbolizes progress, honor, and Chile’s independent status.
