The national flag of Brazil, featuring a green field with a large yellow rhombus at its center. Inside the rhombus is a blue circle depicting a starry sky with a banner bearing the national motto 'ORDEM E PROGRESSO'.
The current design of the Brazilian flag was officially adopted on November 19, 1889, just four days after the proclamation of the republic which replaced the Empire of Brazil. The flag's green and yellow colors were carried over from the previous imperial flag, where green represented the House of Braganza of Emperor Pedro I and yellow represented the House of Habsburg of Empress Maria Leopoldina. The central emblem was changed from the imperial coat of arms to the celestial globe. The number of stars on the flag has been updated to reflect the creation of new states, starting with 21 in 1889 and reaching the current 27 on May 11, 1992.
Current 27-star design adopted
A law added four stars and adjusted their positions, establishing the current 27-star design.
